Babies learning to stand tend to go backwards, and the padded panel covers the head and upper back where that lands. The fabric is breathable, so a wriggling baby does not overheat while wearing it indoors.

Wipe it with a damp cloth day to day, and hand wash gently when it needs more than that. Lay it flat to dry, and skip bleach and ironing so the padding keeps its shape.
